11-06-2005
USA Track & Field
NEW YORK CITY - Olympic Silver
medalist Meb Keflezighi
finished third behind world record holder Paul Tergat
and 2004 ING New York City Marathon champion Hendrick
Ramaala on Sunday at the ING New York City
Marathon.
Running with the lead pack from the gun, Keflezighi
came into the 2005 edition of the race with hopes of being the first U.S.
winner since Alberto Salazar won in 1982. Steadily covering each move
throughout the race, Keflezighi was in contention
for the win until the final mile when Ramaala and
Tergat escalated their duel to the finish. Tergat edged Ramaala on the
line to win by one second in 2:09:30. Keflezighi
was timed in 2:09:56, making him the fastest U.S. marathoner for 2005.
Fellow U.S. Olympian Abdi Abdirahman
finished fifth in 2:11:24.
The women's race
was won by Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka in 2:24:41,
leaving Susan Chepkemei of Kenya to finish as runner-up
for the second straight year in 2:24:55. Jen Rhines
led the U.S.
women, running 2:37:07 to finish 18th!
